Think creatively. Be brave: don’t be afraid to speak up if you have new ideas! Use all the tools at your disposal to help you learn. Don’t forget to read around your discipline and keep up-to-date with the latest trends. To prepare for my trip to Toronto, and before speaking on the FIPP Rising Stars panel, I used the online resources at FIPP, read articles in marketing publications and met with several senior people from around the business to learn more about my company and the whole industry, including Immediate Media’s CEO, Tom Bureau.

Embrace even the most menial of tasks and don’t say no to anything, since everything can be a learning curve and expose you to something or someone worth knowing.
Don’t be afraid to ask or put yourself out there. If someone is doing something that interests you, send them an email asking for advice. If you need help with something, reach out to someone with the skills. You will be surprised how nice people and willing to help people are.
Matthew Stepanic is founding editor and publisher of Glass Buffalo as well as editor at Tanner Young Publishing Group in Canada.
Be prepared to change with innovations in the media industry, and don’t pigeonhole yourself in one speciality or role.
